Windows Mobile 5.0 Magneto preview

by Jayvee on September 25th, 2005

In case you missed it, Mobile-Review has an in-depth look at Windows Mobile 5.0, codenamed Magneto. It’s been about a year since Windows Mobile 2003 SE made its debut, introducing the landscape view that made Internet browsing easier.

The system requirements are as follows: 32 MB of Flash ROM, 32 MB of RAM. Popular memory size will be 64 MB ROM and 64 MB RAM. As for the processor, the old requirements are valid, i.e. Magneto will have acceptable performance at 200 MHz (due to the new kernel the device works slightly faster with the interface).

Hmm, “popular” memory is 64MB? I’d honestly like to know how they came to this number, knowing how Windows Mobile applications get bigger and bigger every year. Users also tend to install more and more apps so … there. I’m understanding of the 200MHz clock speed - this is energy saving power that conserves battery life of Phone Edition devices by leaps and bounds.

Nonetheless, the devs explain how RAM works with Magneto here.

Some UI changes include:

- improved keyboard navigation (this means that most devices will come with one!)
- improved system sounds
- pop up bubbles now appear at the bottom instead of hovering (finally! it was annoying!)

UPDATE: Mobile Review also gives an in-depth commentary on the main differences between Windows Mobile 05 and Smartphone 05.
