The Thing With Music Phones vs. iPods

by admin on March 27th, 2007

More than dedicated MP3 players, people are using phones as their primary source of mobile entertainment. So its either you have an iPod with you or some brand of phone with the ability to play MP3’s. More interesting even is the study that shows the following data about music phones and people:

There are less people downloading songs from online music stores to upload to their phones. This is a rather weird claim as the opposite can be said for people who own iPods and buy from the iTunes Online Store.

“Our survey results indicate that consumers are listening to music from their own collection, so virtually any music phone can meet their needs” said Delly Tamer, CEO of LetsTalk. “Customers are making the most of their music phones with cables and memory cards. The industry needs to offer customers a more compelling reason to download songs directly and easily to their cell phones — better prices, easier navigation, faster speeds, exclusive songs, or all of the above.” [source]

What does this say about phone owners versus iPod owners?

I guess the fact is that people are more SOLD to the iTunes Store as a viable and reliable source of good music even if they are stuck with DRM issues later on. The iPod is an icon and no one sells his iPod just like that, compared to mobile phones which can be replaced every 4 months if need want be.

Secondly, buying music from a local carrier has some compromise as carriers may let you download the song via UMTS or even GPRS. These types of music may actually be considered “fit for mobile phone” but not for your desktop player as the quality may go as low as 64kbps.

In the past 2 1/2 years for instance, I’ve changed my phone 4 times. But I still keep my very first iPod - the 1st generation iPod shuffle.
