The many uses for the Nokia 770
So Nokia announces a device that isn’t a phone nor a PDA but looks like one. “Egad!” I exclaimed. For when a company releases a product that doesn’t make use of its core competence (in this case, consumer phones) then they’ve got some things to iron out internally.
Now I’m a firm believer in a rule my mom taught me when I was young, “don’t judge a gadget by its first impressions.” So it took me a while to digest how Nokia could come up with a PDA that didn’t have PIM functions.
The Nokia 770 is meant to be an online browsing solution. You see, the doohickey only does a few things, but does them very well. Although the device can play audio and video, the 770’s competence is a powerful and easy to use portable browsing solution. What a niche!
The 770 has a 4.1″ touch-sensitive screen with a resolution of 800×480 screen and displays 65k colours. To put into perspective, the 770’s 4.1″ screen is comparable to the screen size of a Sony PSP. At 263g, the 770 weighs about the same as two and a half, average size phones so it isn’t that pocket friendly. Still it is pretty thin so it will slip into your pocket.
So what real life situations can I see this device put to use?
Portable show-and-tell within the office. If your office is WiFi enabled, the 770 makes for a more portable notebook computer.
Internet browser for those who get lots of calls. Sometimes the Bluetooth headset can get really annoying for comfort. Some people find it inconvenient when they browse the Net using their WiFi enabled phone and then get an influx of calls that breaks their browsing session. Sure you can always divert them but alas, your sacrosanct browsing session has been rudely interrupted.
Getting away from it all, while keeping the good stuff. Yeah, especially when your address book and calendar are all work-related. Get a life!!

If you’re going to compare the PSP and 770 screens, you should probably note that the 770 has 800×480 resolution, which means you can see the full width of most web pages, and 225 pixels per inch (5 times the pixel density as most LCD screens).
And the 770’s is a touchscreen, which makes browsing a lot easier than on the PSP, I’d say.
