The many forms of S60
Update: According to Tommi of the S60 blog, Nokia’s Anssi Vanjoki spoke last month with this bold statement:
“We are currently the world’s biggest vendor of cameras and mp3 players. Next year we will be the biggest vendor of computers.”
The S60 blog has posted a very detailed explanation of the evolution of the Series 60 platform from four years of hard work. Now it is said that S60 hath evolved from two editions ++ service packs versions where the latest one, called S60 Second Edition Feature Pack 3 has these already familiar features to offer:
- APIs for feature discovery, scalable icons, browser control, download manager user-interface library, download manager engine, image transform library, image transform plug-ins, Universal Serial Bus (USB) client driver, and an updated utilities API.
- J2ME™ Web Services Specification (JSR-172) and Java APIs for Bluetooth (JSR-82), with OBEX support Java APIs.
- Support for scalable user interfaces (176 x 208-pixel, 240 x 320-pixel, and 352 x 416-pixel screens).
Is it time for a new Feature Pack? Well yes! Back in 2005 a huge contest was held for developers to come up with a new service pack for S60. Some of the requirements include:
1. Enterprise Applications
* that gives mobile workers real-time access to information and co-workers
* that enables cost-efficient life-cycle management of mobile business devices in enterprise management2. Location aware applications and services
The Location aware applications and services category can include any innovative, lucrative-to-consumer, easy-to-use standalone or client-server application via GPS and maps* Local search navigation and travel
* Gaming, entertainment, music
* Outdoor and sports3. Mobile Music applications
The focus of the Mobile Music applications category is on applications that provide delight and value to music consumers, when they play, manage, and share their music collections.* Superior usability of music application (task flow, views.)
* Innovative playback or collection management experience
* Combining usage types, combining various media
* Sharing play lists, information or experiences about music4. Flash applications
The Flash category includes Macromedia Flash Lite applications with Flash mobile technology. The applications can be
* Gaming, Media and Entertainment
* Tutorials and Interactive Help
* Personal and Enterprise Productivity
So it looks like the next iteration of S60 will be … a desktop computer! Hehe. In any case, the contest culminates in April 2006 where the finalists will be announced.
