The idiot’s guide to buying second hand cellphones

by Jayvee on November 7th, 2005

So my friend Bernie posted the second part of his buying second hand guide and this time focuses on mobile phones. You can take this piece from two directions - from the buyer, and also from the seller’s point of view. If you’re planning to sell a second hand phone, these pointers can really help you make that sale immediately.

If possible, ask the seller to bring the original box of the unit together with the original charger and other accessories when buying a pre-owned cellphone. The box should have an IMEI number that should match the IMEI number of the unit itself. This will assure you that the phone you are about to buy is not stolen. Be wary when the seller can’t produce the original box, charger and other bundled accessories.

The comment about the box and original accessories needing to be included or you may have a stolen phone is just bull. Are you buying a used phone or a box?? You should have the ESN numbers for CDMA carriers like Sprint and Verizon so you can have them check their system and verify reactivation. If it’s a GSM phone, who cares if it’s stolen, you just insert your SIM card in and go! Of course, if you like to collect box’s you should go for it. When I buy a phone all i need is the phone, battery and a charger. everything else is just a waste of a good tree. Get real!

Here is a great selling site to get some cash for your old cell phones!
