Archos AV700 and MPIO One

by Jayvee on September 22nd, 2005

There are two PVP (portable video player) companies I love tracking. MPIO, an underdog in digital music hardware has made several leaps and bounds the past few months, starting with their necklace MP3 player, which rivaled the iPod shuffle in terms of aesthetic value. Archos, a leader in the portable digital media player industry is known for churning out compact PVPs with very bright and crisp screens.

It just so happened these two companies had their booths side-by-side in a tech show I attended a few days ago. On the right was MPIO showing off the MPIO One, the world’s smallest portable video player, weighing at 35 grams and no larger than a small box of matches. The tiny thing can hold a maximum of 1GB worth of data and retails for roughly US $200.00.

MPIO ONE is equipped with Woolfson 8750 codec that used in premium HDD type players. It supports hardware 3D sound effect and Dynamic Bass, Treble Adjustment for its best sound quality. It also supports 9 kinds of EQ such as Normal, Pop, Rock, Jazz, Reggae, Live, Soft, Classic and User Mode. You can define your own sound setting. Make your own music world with best sound effect that fits you.

The MPIO One is available in several colors. For such as small thing, it can do so much. I’m just wondering how I can appreciate watching Finding Nemo on a really small screen. Makes me wonder that as devices get smaller, and as the portable audio is slowly shifting to portable video, there comes a point when smaller ain’t better! But I digress. Save that for another time.

Now the booth on the left housed Archos, showing off the largest portable media player, the AV700. This gargantuan beast boasts a HUGE 7″ inch screen. It also supports direct TV recording, photo and video viewing on the family TV room. It has a maximum capacity of 100GB.

Placed near its docking pod with its infrared emitter and connected to the television set via the video cables, it looks more like some kind of strange octopus with a rectangular head that washed up on the beach than it does the latest technological toy. You’d be well advised to load any files you may need onto it before leaving for your trip instead of taking all the accessories along, unless you’re ready to devote an extra bag for it. In any case, with its 40-GB capacity, the basic version can store 160 hours of video, 20,000 songs, or 400,000 photos.

Tom’s Hardware Guide to the AV700

Here is a comparison of the AV400 (above) with the AV700 in terms of size. You can really tell how big a difference a few inches makes. Albeit you lose the portability war. This proves my reinforced theory that there will never be a perfect convergence device.
