Some thoughts on the Nokia E90 Communicator

by Jayvee on October 13th, 2007

Out of the box, the Nokia E90 is an impressive device. Following the suite of a fantastic repertiore of enterprise phones, the communicator has been rebranded to fit the “E” class of phones. This simply means that the E90 is equipped with multiple connectivity options for web browsing. This includes high speed HSDPA as well as wireless 802.11g connectivity.

Unlike the previous models, the E90 sticks with the Nokia S60 platform, tweaking it to perform faster than your average Nseries device. This is well and good as the E90 can be used in two different ways - closed as a regular phone and opened up to reveal a full QWERTY keyboard.

Although the E90 is a worthy buy, there are still some quirks to the device. For instance, the fact that the full QWERTY keyboard does not have a backlight means that it will be pretty hard to do your longer documents in the absence of light (EDIT: There is a backlight option located on the upper left keyboard area but you’d have to press and hold the button for it to stay on — thanks to my commenters for pointing this out!). You will have to tilt the screen in a perpendicular fashion to shed light onto the keyboard. Other than that, battery life is amazingly efficient, and the ability to sync with Mac OS X is an added boon.

I’ll be posting a more in depth review of the device in the coming days.
