Release thoughts: Palm Treo 680

by Jayvee on October 13th, 2006

treo680.jpgPalm recently launched the Treo 680, which is the first line of Treos smartphones to come in several colors including graphite, arctic, copper and crimson.

Specs do not impress
If we were to run down the specs of the Treo 680, the only notable improvements would be an increased internal memory size and the shaving off of the antenna. Software wise, we have a more powerful “pro” version of Docs To Go that allows full editing of Office apps as well as an enhanced UI for the phone and addy book features.

What? No WiFi? No 3G? No push email? No higher MP camera? Well, OK we can do away with the multimedia functions first since this is after all, an enterprise phone. The 680 is obviously an incremental upgrade that doesn’t offer anything value added to long time Treo users who are waiting for that next big leap in communication. Thus, my next point:

Market is for “first Treo buyers”
Old Treo users would love to grab their hands onto a Treo device that served multiple wireless options apart from GSM and GPRS. Where’s the 3G and the WiFi connectivity that’s supposed to be a staple for power users? Thus, the Treo 680 is a back to basics device for the mass consumer. Which is why it comes in pretty colors. If you were an enterprise guy, would you care if the Treo came in white? No, not really. You were after the functionality thing. I guess Palm is trying out a “Treo for everyone” campaign because of its marketing hype, sexy form factor (no antenna) and even more simplified user interface.

Complacency at the top
I guess Palm is sitting pretty at the top of its game. They’re obviously not oblivious to the fact that Sony Ericsson can come up with a P990i with a built in thumbboard and keypad, WiFi and 3G! A note though.. it may be possible that this is going to be Palm’s last hurrah for the Palm OS platform before they adopt another operating system.

Your thoughts over mojitos?
