Polymer Vision: Digital Paper has arrived
A new device has been unveiled at the 3GSM Conference, paving the way for consumers to enjoy the benefits of digital book paper. This mobile phone is a GSM device that doubles as a foldable book reader. Although its design is crude, this spells a lot of hope for the future of portable media screens.
While smaller than a typical mobile phone, the new device features a display which extends up to 5-inches and may simply be stored away after use by folding it, thanks to the flexibility of the polymer based display material. The device features the largest display available in the industry for the same form factor, the 16 grey levels combined with a high contrast and high reflectivity display for paper like reading experience enables comfortable reading, even in bright sunlight. The digital book can store text, RSS feeds, audiobooks and subscribe to podcasts. With average use, the battery can last up to ten days thanks to the low power consumption of the device’s screen. This is a big breakthrough as the “future” was once attributed to OLED screens having the best performance to battery life performance.
