PC Magazine Reader Survey: Phones and Services 2005

by Jayvee on October 13th, 2005

One thing I look forward to every year is PC Magazine’s 18th annual Reader Satisfaction Survey report which they actually print into an easy to understand yet comprehensive article.

So November 2005 has the following for mobile phones:

It seems that the Readers’ Choice for telco service provider in the US* is Verizon, having garnered a rating of 7.6 out of 10. It seems that Verizon is the choice mainly because of a well-rounded service offering for call quality, customer service and amalgamation of features. They scored really low at satisfaction with pricing scheme though. But then again, you really do get what you pay for, right?

In terms of preferred phone brands, Motorola does an almost clean sweep with 6 out of 8 service providers having Motorola as the preferred brand. What’s weird though is that they also scored the highest for repair frequency, which is about 17% for Alltel and Cingluar, based on a 12-month period. The average repair frequency is 13% across the board. What’s happening to Motorola? They’ve always had a rep for creating the most durable phones, like the old Startac (now that was a real all-terrain phone!).

It’s a lot different in Asia however - Motorola is only in the market because of the E398i and the RAZR. They’re practically non-existent compared to Nokia, Samsung and Sony Ericsson, which are the three preferred brands here.

*That’s 11,052 respondents who answered the survey of over 48,000 products and services. We’re assuming that most of these readers are from the US.
