Nokia pulls a fast one with the 6288

Several months ago I reviewed the Nokia 6280, which I deemed as best midrange Nokia camera phone ever made. In fact, I quote from my previous post:

“The 6280 is a phone that works. Remember the Nokia 6230 that won so many awards back in 2004 for being hassle-free? Well, the 6280 is like this, having a sleek design with a fast user interface topped with a high quality 2MP digital camera. This is a phone definitely worth considering for long-term use.”

It’s almost as if Nokia tried to make us forget that there was such a model buried deep in its recesses of mobile phone catalogue.

This is the Nokia 6280 ... so what's the diff???

This is the previous model, called the Nokia 6280. No difference really …

What then makes the new Nokia 6288 different from the 6280? Well, apart from the bump in battery life and new colors, absolutely nothing! The Nokia 6280 comes with a 970mAh battery while the 6288 comes with a 1100mAh worth of power. Also depending on the package, the 6280 comes with an external 64MB of memory while the 6288 should come with something bigger. Websites say at least 512MB but I’m assuming the package differs per country.

Oh wait, before I forget to mention, the 6288 supports Bluetooth Stereo (the 6280 did not??) which means you can pair this with the Nokia Bluetooth Headset.

Main Differences:

  • The 6288 comes in new colors
  • The 6288 supports wireless stereo headset (as mentioned by CNET Asia)
  • The 6288 comes with 512MB of expansion while the 6280 comes with 64MB
  • The 6280 has a longer battery life

Bottomline
I highly recommend this phone to those who want a hassle-free mobile phone that is both stylish and takes good quality photos. It may be very similar to the 6280 in all ways but this is still a better unit with all things taken into account. If the 6280 were not a good phone, I really would not recommend this model but as it turns out, this phone builds upon the legacy of its predecessor. It may not be much, but it is still an upgraded model.

One thing i have noticed is that on the 6288, it shows a completed percentage bar when sending a file over bluetooth, where the 6280 does not.

Also, wondering if the 6288 has the 2gig sd card fix? On my 6280, i can’t use data stroage mode, the phone doesn’t like it and gives data corruption problems

    i got a 6288 as “upgrade” to my N70.
seems to me that the N70 is better. (this is like that time i was “upgraded” from N7650 to sony ericsson T610 - thought i was getting k800i!)
also if you get the phone from “3″ in the uk they keep the 512MB card for themselves and give you a 64MB. New shape of card means I’m now memory deficient: MP3s not fitting on there.

i have had both the 6288 and 6280 and they are not the most reliable or sturdy phones. I would reccomend a n70 over both of them. though it does not have infrared its useless unless you are sending stuff to older phones. Also the n70 has more memory but you may as well just buy a memory card.

I have been using nokia 6288 for the past 1.5 years and its been great. the picture quality is unbelieveable. The camera works just great with Nightmode ON. You can easily extend the memory upto 2Gig that gives you more than 4hours of video. The interface is as simple as it can be, easy handling, great sound. Highly recommend this phone.
