Nokia 6682: When one lens is enough

by Jayvee on August 25th, 2005

A chip off the old block
A few weeks ago, I took out the Nokia 6680 for a spin. I remember getting really annoyed with the camera in front, that is supposedly used for streaming 3G waves so you can see the person you are talking to. Of course, if your country’s telcos didn’t support 3G then it makes for a secondary 0.3MP camera, which is ridiculously stupid, and just plain expensive to buy. Besides, the 6680 already has a wonderful 1.3MP camera hidden behind.

So now Nokia releases the 6682, that does away with the camera and adds a powerful EDGE connectivity. If you must know, the 668x series from Nokia is a phone-cum PDA, without sacrificing a lot of the phone functions. it looks and feels like a phone, is neither bulky in the pocket nor heavy. Kudos to Nokia for chipping away the unnecessaries. EDGE is definitely the way to go. I personally don’t believe in jumping the gun with 3G as of late.

The 6681/6682 is a clever move by Nokia as it means that users on EDGE networks have access to pretty much the same technology as their 3G counterparts, and this is a useful handset for those carriers that didn’t go to the massive expense of acquiring a 3G licence. EDGE data support gives download speeds of up to 236.8 kbps, which isn’t that much slower that the 3G speeds of 384 kbps on the 6680. Really, apart from the video calling there is very little functional difference between EDGE and 3G as far as most users will be concerned
