Motorola Ming A1200 hands on
I christen thee the “MotoMing!” Sure took a while. I have a unit on review straight from China. The Ming (whose boring name is the A1200) is a Linux based PDA phone that hails from the old Motorola smartphone designs. The new Ming looks absolutely fantastic. If we were to grade the Ming’s aesthetics, it would have to rate a 5/5, 100%, 10/10 .. well you get the picture. If you want to see the complete specs of the A1200, then click here.
Seriously, the Ming’s form factor is to die for. Take a look at the sleek semi-see through protective flip case that isn’t just an aesthetic boon. The Ming’s flip actually shows off the antenna which leads to the earpiece hardware. See that? Wow.
The Ming is subject to fingerprints and other icky stuff because of its material, which is some sort of hard, smoked transparent plastic. Take a look at the picture below to see what I mean. These particles were highlighted after an hour’s commute in my pocket.
Text messaging is probably the worst with this phone if you have small fingers. The stylus itself is rather small so you may want to buy a larger one. I’ve managed with my little Asian fingers though. SMS input can be done in a variety of formats:
- English Keyboard (QWERTY)
- Numeric Pad
- Handwriting Recognition
- Pinyin Board
- Zhuyin Board
The highlight of the Ming is its 2MP camera that can also record video. It has a very innovative user interface for taking shots. Tap the screen and panels that display camera options such as effects and brightness spring out from the side in semi-transparency. Tap it again and they disappear with a cool animation.

Here are some samples of pictures taken at hi-res. The shots are actually a lot better in quality compared to what other smartphone / PDA cameras can take.

Pictures are at 1600×1200 size (resized here) and take up around 500kb of space.

can you synchronize with Microsoft outlook?
Thanks

Sep 18, 2006 at 10:44 pm
Derek: you need to use the Motorola phone tools software that should have come with the phone. Otherwise push it with Bluetooth (your ‘puter needs to have BT or buy a $15 adaptor)
Victor: It will sync contacts from Outlook only. =( It is embedded linux, which means some day someone might code a method to sync the calandar. There’s all sorts of software and tools being coded for linux phones all the time, but obviously it depends if you’re willing to wait around for such a thing.

Is there a way to get the calendar to reflect the duration of the task? Ie: if lunch is from 12-2, can I get it to block the time from 12-2 rather than just at 12?

if you dont mind the small screen format plus the fact that the ming is purely touch screen controlled, then go for it!

I like this phone. It handy, doesn’t lag, like the pda i had cingular (htc) 8125. picture quality is great. it came with a 128mb card. just get a bigger one if it takes up room. but with 128 at 2mp it holds like 200 pictures. yea the typing sucks, but thats why you write it out. overall. i love it. and it does block out time from 12-2 if you tell it to. and choose that your busy during that time.

Hi
I had a very unique problem - since there was no screen protector for this I bought one and installed and immediately after the touch screeen functionality went awry - it took me two days to figure out what went wrong - it was the screen protector - the touch screen functionality works best with no screen protector on - FYI.
A recent motoming a1200 user and loving it.

Hi
Does anyone know how many address book entries I can have on this? I have a 512MB memory card installed. Everytime I sync with outlook - only about 300 or so entries come in while I have more than 1000 in outlook - how do I import all the contacts?
Thanks in advance.

REF: Cut & Paste function?
Greetings,
I had an (way) earlier model, the A008, which suffered from the crippling absence of a cut and paste feature. Does this model (motoming) have cut and paste?
Thanks!
Marco.
Shekar
Oct 28, 2006 at 5:41 pm
Marco
No - there is no cut and paste feature yet - there is also no way to add numbers from address book to turbo dialing - you have to physically enter them. Motorola has a lot to learn on the feature side from Sony Ericsson. All the best.

Oct 29, 2006 at 1:40 am
I’m not sure how long the battery life is, it’s more than 12h on standby… i supose you could significantly reduce the battery’s life by not following instructions when you first charge the phone.
Change msn to english:
Open MSN
1. Click bottom left text
2. Click 5th option down
3. Select first option
4. press second button from left (first is disabled)
All good :D
is a great phone!
Cut and paste feature? sure is!
select the text by pressing and dragin from leftside to right side of text. then press and hold on text, squares should form around where you pressed and eventually a menu will appear. select cut. then press and hold where you want the text to be when the menu appears, select paste. :D

There is cut and paste. And it works wonderfully well.
You just press (and keep pressing) the part you want to highlight.
You can then choose copy or cut.
Go to wherever you want to paste it, keep pressing down and the paste option will show.

I have the A1200 and cannot get the email pop3 to work (browser email does). When I launch “email” for any pop3 address (yahoo, google, charter)it connects to my server (t-mobile’s voice stream) and then when it goes to connect to POP or SMTP I get an error message “Host is not found”. The only thing that appears odd is when connecting it shows “connecting topop.mail.yahoo.com” with no space between “connecting to” and the pop address. All else seems normal but does not work.
T-mobile and Yahoo have spent 1 1/2 hours each trying to figure out what is wrong, but no luck. Any brilliant tech’s out there?

Hi
I am a recent user of the A1200. I have a few questions, I am not able to resolve. Hope one of you would be able to assit me
1. Is it possible to store the Contacts/Tasks/Calender/SMS information on the memory card. I performed a RTFM and was not able to find a solution.
2. I have misplaced the Software Media CDs. Is it possible to download a copy from “somewhere”
3. I feel more comfortable with a device which I can manipulate. Does we have some phone hacks for the A1200. Like Phone reset etc
Thanks in Advance

If you forget your unlock code: At the
Enter Unlock Code prompt, try entering 1234 or the
last four digits of your phone number. If that
doesn’t work, tap = open the unlock code
bypass screen. Enter your security code, then
tap OK to submit the security code.

Well, I bought my Ming A1200 some three months back, and it has grown on me like anything. The UI is very intuitive, and it helps you manage your schedule if you’re a busy professional.
Further on, the quality of audio, if you use the earphones, is pretty good. The default speaker volume is too low, though.
I haven’t felt the need to install too many additional packages onto this sleek thing (I do that kind of “extreme stuff” to my laptop, instead), but I did install the Gmail mobile app and it works beautifully.
All in all, an excellent buy for its price. I couldn’t ask for anything better. This is Rs. 16k well spent!

Jan 23, 2007 at 7:13 pm
This is a paste from cingular.com forum with the original message as follows with a few of my own revisions:
This is a paste from a http://www.motorolafans.com concerning setting for A1200. I bought one for my wife and used this forum to get all the tips and tricks. I hope that there is a US version coming soon for this phone.
Go to the setup setting from the menu>data network> click on the tab with the three bars to make a “new” network, then put this in:
Profile Name: Cingular
GPRS setting:
APN: wap.cingular
User Name: WAP @ CINGULARGPRS.COM
Password: CINGULAR1 (ALL UPPERCASE)
Time Out: Off
Primary Gateway IP: 66.209.11.61
Port: 9201
Secondary Gateway IP: LEAVE BLANK
Port: LEAVE BLANK
DNS Server:BLANK
CSD setting:BLANK
Dial in number NONE
Query at Logon: (NO CHECK MARK)
User Name
Password
Baud Rate Auto
Line Type: ISDN
Time Out Off
DNS Server:
Save the settings, when you wanna connect online, you have to go back here and hit the “connect” tab, don’t forget to turn it off when done.
Then go to your browser, press the tab with the three lines>set up>profiles>then you hit the tab with the three lines and create a “new”
Profile Name: MEdia Net
Homepage: device.home
Network Link: Cingular
Save it and choose this one to be the default, dont’t forget to save.
These are my setting and they work fine. Also to set up MMS, be sure to enter these settings (Courtesy of Bruceleroy):
Go to your envelope for the sms and mms text>click the tab with the three lines to service setup>multimedia message>default profile, you edit this.
MMS Settings:
Profile Name: MMS over HTTP
MMSC: http : //mmsc.cingular.com/ (No Spaces)
Max Sending Size: 30K
Network Profile: Cingular
I hope this helps you.
I guess when we get in this far, we can choose what page we want to make our homepage when we get, or the media net website for us will automatically be in place, you have to log in to cingular.com = media net from a computer, you have to set this up with a media bundle, I think you can do it without signing up for a feature, but with all the KB usage, you might as well.
Test by sending a mms from your phone to your phone, in that way you know if it can send and recieve.

I use mine with cingular, I’ve gotten it online using cingular, but because it’s not a cingular device, I cannot download games or ringtones or anything from them. On the otherhand, I’ve got the phone tools for motorola, so I really don’t need to buy ringers anymore.
Sometimes, my A1200 turns off for no apparent reason. It’s done it to me 3-4 times so far in the week that I’ve had it. I’m sure it shouldn’t do that, is it doing that to anybody else?

is anyone having an issue with the phone hanging up whebn you try to take it out of a carrying pouch? I am very careful not to touch any buttons on the sides but if I touch the plastic cover it seems to hang up on whomever is calling. I have it set that the flip does not activate the answer.

I set up my SMS and MMS the way all the help sites said but I am still not able to send or receive messages even though it tells me I am sending them? Anyone got any ideas?

thats weird. that would have to be the concern of your phone service provider as it is the card thats locked.

I have had my A1200 for about 6 months and just recently I have been getting a Flash Memory is full warning. Does anyone know what that means and how to fix it?
urnberg
Feb 8, 2007 at 6:18 pm
if your sim card is locked, you have to call the cell phone provider for the unlock code, after a few failed tries, your sim is going to fry. So you are going to have to buy a new, at about $25 and call your cell phone provider to update the new sim card in the system. Give it about a minute while the phone is off and power on and you should have service again. If it should happen again, just call your cell phone provider at the first sign of trouble instead of diagnosing it yourself.

Feb 9, 2007 at 10:52 am
Flash memory is the memory space you have on your little memory card that is in place in the phone where the battery is. You can go in the file manager option from the main menu and and begin to delete things to make space or you can just purchase another one.

I’ve had this phone for a couple of months and can’t say enough good about it. If you are considering purchasing one - just do it.
Here’s one thing that I’m not certain about. I’ve got my email, internet & etc. all hooked up. But when someone calls and I ignore the call or miss it - the ming always shoots me a blank text message afterward. Does anyone know how to fix this? It also usually says I have two voicemails when I open the phone up - but there aren’t any voice messages. Other then that the phone is great!
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

Shanon / Urnburg,
My Ming came with 128K memory. Not enough. Let me know if buying 1 or 2 GB Sandisk Micro SD a good choice.
Here is another question for Urnburg. Do I need to do any setup in my Ming to have Outlook calendar to sync with the phone? I’ve already tried synchronizing after intalling the Motorola Phone Tool (software came with the phone), but the phone is unable to connect with my Outlook. I’m not setup to use Ming for email, just an FYI.
Thanks,
Tauf98

Linkerror
Mar 15, 2007 at 2:02 am
Guys, got the answer… For all those who want to change their network carrier :-
1. Open your dialing pad
2. on left side bottom, click on option menu
3. a new dialog with few options will open, click on “network” (This would be 2nd line under Line option)
4. Click on that and you will get 4 options for network
5. Click on “Available networks”
6. And you are done.. you will get a list of all available network carriers.
Cheers !!!!

Regarding my previous posting (#170):
To be more specific, I get a ring telling me I have a new message. It’s blank, and it’s not from anyone, so I figured this meant I had a new voice mail. Ok. so this is a questions i simply CANNOT find any straight answers to: Is anyone ELSE having wicked issues sending & receiving pics w/ the Moto Ming ?
I mean technically, thats not the question: the question is: How the #@?%@* do u send & receive pics w the Moto Ming ? Every time i try i get SEND FAILED. CHECK SETTINGS.
I hear this is notorious w/ this model: settings that won’t stick. Anyone ?

Problem solved with the “Host not found” problem with email.
my problem was that I was able to browse but not use MSN messenger application on the configured email… seems like if your having this problem its probably because you have WAP settings on your phone… get rid of those and problems Solved :D

I just bought a ming about a week ago. It’s sweet. I love it. At first it takes a while to get use to but once you know how to do the do u are good to go. One thing though, I usually buy motorola phones because you can lock application, so that people don’t snoop around in your phone. However, I notice you can’t do this on the ming! Is there an update that will allow that or it is just not possible?

Hey i had the same problem tried all the different config. on the web that ive found and still nothing works. I could send mms but i cant recieve. I also noticed the same thing when you save the settings to ISDN it goes back to modem, i dont know if that’s the problem. I talk to a couple reps in T-Mobile and USA Motorola they said it may have to do with what kind of software you have in your ming, if the phone came from hong kong and the software ends with 53P that might be the problem. If you type WWW008W on your phones dial pad you will be able to find your software. Oh yeah go to your dial pad hit menu insert, tap insert wait, that makes the W, do the same step to get all the W’s. If the first set of numbers end with a .53P then you might have to change your software by flashing it. Thats what they told me that motorola told them was the problem with HONG KONG A1200 mings. The software on the phone cant accept tmobile MMS, which really sucks. I tried it with a Different A1200 Ming with software 44P still the same thing, my guess all the A1200 that was manufactured in Honk Kong have this problem. Let me know if you find a way fixs this problem.

I just bought the Ming 2 weeks ago, and I love it. Figured out a few things, and hopefully this’ll be helpful (I love cellpohones)
1) The ming supports 2 GB MicroSD Cards. You can fill the card right up, but when you want to access any file from the card, it will take a few minutes, BE PATIENT!
2) Regarding internet settings, contact your service provider BEFORE launch the browser, and get all the internet settings (to know what to ask them, hit the menu button on the top left hand side, go to setup, go to Data Network, hit the menu button on the BOTTOM left hand side, and go to new. It will have all the information that you need to fill out, and you just re-iterate that info to your carrier! Mine gave it to me no problem!)
3) READ THE MANUAL!!! It does help when there are specifics that you have (like time, calender, etc.)
4) The Mobile phone tools software that you usually get with this phone DOES sync with Outlook Express for contacts only. It will sync Contacts, Calender, & Tasks if you have Office 2003. MPT does not yet support office 2007 (learned the hardway)
5) IN regards to MSN messenger, somebody took the time to give you the steps above, but there they are anyway:
1) Launch MSN Messenger
2) Click the bottom left hand button on the screen
3) Select the 5th option in that menu (count from the first line as 1)
4) Select the first option (there’ll only be 2 options, select the top one - they’ll have circles beside them)
5) Select the 2nd button from the left
