iPod nano Q&A with Apple Singapore

by Jayvee on September 24th, 2005

Recently came from our country launch of the iPod nano. A bunch of my colleagues had the chance to do some FAQ’s with some of the product managers from Apple Singapore. This isn’t verbatim. I’m going to summarize the whole thing. I spent most of my time goofing off with the camera as seen in this picture. That’s an iPod nano I’m holding. It’s so thin and sexy! (like me! hyuk!)

Q. Hottest question here, why did you guys opt not to put Firewire support on the nano?
A. It’s a matter of market penetration - we want the iPod nano to appeal to Windows users as well. Though Mac users may be biased towards Firewire, we don’t want the Windows guys to feel alienated. So we decided choose a connection that both platforms enjoyed - Bluetooth 2.0. The iPod nano will charge with FW, but not sync. (And yes we forced quyestion if we could find some hacks to do this but he guaranteed that the nano will not sync with FW.)

And the differences with the other iPods in terms of buying advice?
The 4GB iPod nano is priced at the same point as the iPod mini, which is no longer in production. In reality, flash-based storage is really more expensive but you can do more with it - like jog! If you were to choose your iPod, the choice won’t have to depend on the screen anymore since they are all colored. It will have to depend on what you will use it for aside from music? Portability and storage size are the two main factors.

Q. Last, how are disgruntled iPod mini users taking it?
Well, we’re received a lot of flak from the tech lust. But that’s how technology is - after six months, what you bought will be replaced. The big advantage of the mini is really the storage space. You get a better price per megabyte. As for the shuffle, you can readily use it as a thumb drive. You can’t do that with the nano.

Jayvee’s note - I bought an iPod shuffle about 1 and a half months before the nano came out. Maybe I’m justifying why its so damn useful as a thumb drive compared to the nano. Heh.
