How niched telco services get
I recently found a way to get cheaper calls from my local telco. Instead of the usual “dialing of the phone numbers” (an event closely affiliated with “the running of the bulls”), I could send an SMS message to a service number to get a “special deal.”
I started by composing an SMS to a number (in this case 883) and then the contents of the message will be the number I want to call. Almost immediately, my phone rings and I get elevator music whilst i wait for my call to be connected. Once received by the answering party, I have a set five minutes of talk time for only PHP 15.00 (that’s roughly US $0.30 cents).
Usually a 5-minute call would cost about a dollar. Now I don’t know what the rates are in your country but to the average Pedro living in the Philippines, a savings cut by more than half is a huge thing.
So I came to a realization that the weirder the services get, the more competitive the telco industry is. I must admit that sending an SMS to get a “special call rate” is weird. It is useful though in some instances - like when I need to talk to someone, but he annoys the hell out of me. So I get my business done and the conversation automatically gets severed after 5 minutes. Yay!
