A friendly-priced hello with the J300i

by Jayvee on August 23rd, 2005

I'm entry level, but still spiffy!

Here’s a small beauty that caught my eye while my girlfriend and I were shopping for a new phone. Unlike its top dog models, Sony Ericsson has left its low end line to flirt conspicuously with window shoppers who can only dream of owning a phone that looks like a million bucks but costs waaaay less. Presenting the J300i. You’ve probably heard or seen it before, but got easily distracted by SE’s top line phones (namely the W800i and K750i).

The J300i is priced below US $200.00 and reminds me of a race car - the usual clunky antenna that sticks to the jeans pocket (don’t you hate that?) has been replaced with spoiler. Thus, the J300i combines form and function. You can attach a lanyard around the spoiler / antenna to make a neck strap.

As far as connectivity is concerned, the phone is packed with GSM 900/1800 network compatibility with … no Bluetooth and err.. no IrDA .. but what can you expect from an entry level phone? At least it looks fantastic! If you do want to have some sort of synchronization, you’ll have to visit the Sony Ericsson store and purchase a PC Suite conduit. It’s a bummer this application is not Mac compatible though, considering SE phones are best with Macs.

In terms of functions, you can only save a max of 20 messages per folder. The 12MB of internal memory is reserved for downloading photos, themes, and tones. Battery lasts for a day on teh estimate. It’s hella light too weighing as much as two iPod shuffles.

That’s it for the J300i - no Bluetooth or infrared, no built-in camera too. But if you’re after a wonderful entry level phone, this one looks good pressed on your ear. Oh, just between you and me, pick the silver one (shown here). The other two colors (pink and black) don’t look as great. My girlfriend bought the silver.
