Google Trends: Wireless Internet

I’ve been playing around with Google Trends and decided to do a comparative search for the following terms:

Cellphone, GPRS, EDGE, WiFi and 3G. The results are actually surprising - in terms of connectivity, there seems to be a higher demand for WiFi than any other form of Internet browsing. Because the top two areas of wireless technology can be found in the Philippines (Makati and Manila), I can attest to the quick downfall of GPRS and EDGE connectivity.

Consumers here need to own a cellphone, but don’t necessarily make use of the value added services like GPRS and EDGE to connecto to the Internet. Perhaps the most useful online venture of the mobile warrior here is checking the movie schedules through WAP.

Then again, the average yuppie working in Makati (I’m one of them) boasts a decent Internet lifestyle, being wired to the Net during the day and toting an affordable laptop to surf in the Makati area - the main business district is interconnected with bridges and walkways and most of the area is gifted with WiFi.

I honestly think the fear of most Filipinos with 3G phones is cost. It has to be made plain that the Philippines poses a unique business strategy for wireless services such as 3G and HSPDA. This is because we are a developing country and rates for such services would have to be made cheap. I attended a recent presscon of Globe Telecom’s HSPDA launch and we’re actually the first in Asia to be this advanced with this technology - but have a unique pricing scheme.

The end result? All eyes on us to see how things unfold.
