An Apple smartphone?
Speculations say that “all roads lead to phone” for Apple. And it doesn’t take a Motorola CEO to say so. With the launch of the ROKR, Apple has formally entered the convergence market, combining the seamless integration of its iTunes application with a mobile phone. Although these were just baby steps, it’s just a matter of putting two and two together to figure out that Apple should be coming out with a smartphone in the next few months.
My possible reasons why Apple hasn’t made visible moves to come out with one:
The ROKR is still rockin’ hot because of the hype. Notice they’ve limited the maximum iTunes library to 100 songs. This is Apple drawing a circle around Motorola - “you’re only up to here.”
The iPod is selling like hotcakes. An Apple smartphone should capitalize on the brand strength of the world’s most popular music player. If they do this now, it would be a king of the hill battle between devices of the same catalogue.
The user interface and software integration has to be perfect - more perfect that the Treo 600’s design. There are more questions than answers: An Apple smartphone should be able to sync with iTunes. But how should it sync with iPhoto? Now it should sync with Mac OS X but should it just ignore the one kazillion Windows users?
Your guess is as good as mine.
