A Mobile Phone for the “Gray” Market
With the 3GSM Conference highlighting the best of technological breakthroughs, a small company is ignoring all that and goes against the grain of technology. Emporia Telecom, based in Linz has developed a mobile phone for the elderly:
The handset they developed has no digital camera, Internet access or instant messaging capabilities, but it does include a button to call relatives or friends in an emergency, is compatible with hearing aids and can run on regular AAA batteries. [source]
I guess this move goes to show how the trend in tapping into new markets is truly working. With this new niche market, Emporia Telecom is sure to win the sentiments of the elderly who are not tech savvy but want a no frills way to contact their friends and relatives especially if there is an emergency.

I wish I had this option locally.
I am only 44, but a genetic condition has my hands, arms… (all of me) acting more like 84.
I want a no frills phone that is hefty, solid and large enough to feel in my hands. Those small things out there today would get droped quite often by me I fear.
There are bigger phones on the market of course, but I can’t pay upwards of $100 for a phone - especially since I have NO USE for games, music, videos, downloads… .
I want a phone not a toy !!!
I wouldn’t mind voice activated calling or texting if there was a way for me to afford it. It should be optional because I probably couldn’t afford it.
I sure wish calling plans were more flexable/reasonable too. I don’t want to have get a second job JUST to pay for a phone and to be able to use it.
